Spending Time with Jesus

Last night, a man in our church preached a good sermon on "Choosing the Good Part." The Bible story that he pulled out was the story of Mary and Martha. Mary was sitting at Jesus' feet listening to what Jesus was having to say, but Martha was serving:

Luke 10: 38-42

38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.
40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

One thing that really stood out to me last night was the fact that though Martha was probably doing a good thing by serving, but her main focus was SELF. Notice what she said, "Lord, dost Thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone?" How many times a day am I focused on self? I am afraid that a lot of times I am, but notice Mary...because Mary was totally focused on Jesus and spending time with Him, she did not have time to focus on herself. That is a real truth for us Christians...if we spend our time focusing on the Lord and take time to spend alone with Him then we will not be as tempted to focus on ourselves! Kind of like the little acrostic that we learned when we were little...Jesus Others Yourself...let's spend some time at Jesus' feet today!
